English men make lousy lovers..
Okay there's a provocative statement for you ;). I am not speaking from personal experience there but that is the general idea that a lot of European women of my acquaintance have ... that if you want a great lover, go for a French or Italian man and if you want an inept, bumbling eejit go for a Brit.
Now that I've offended all you British men out there, anyone wanna comment?
I won't grade myself as I am now, but I still had a lot to learn when I entered my first marriage.
In the late sixties there wasn't any school education in these things and they were not talked about at home. So one learned from "dirty jokes" and boy talk. This was ridden with misconceptions. Also boys often didn't know girls very well. I'm sure thatin those days British men were terrible lovers. (there are statistics about it but it's years ago since I've seen them)
I would add that I suspect that British women weren't all that good either.
Now I assume things have changed quite a lot. There is at least some education and more openness in Britain.
There's some education but education seemed to me to focus more on what went where than the mechanics of actually being a good lover..

I imagine the reason Britain has a poor reputation when it comes to hot lovin' is that Brits are still seen as repressed and therefore unable to express their emotions. On top of that is general prudery - to take TV as an example (though that might be a poor choice, as there are other factors involved), if you compare late-night (or even early-night, if thats a word :D) TV in Germany and the UK, big difference. Telling, considering that Germany also has a reputation for being stiff and unemotional; doesn't seem to translate into prudish censorship on television.
Then again, I'm Turkish/German, so I can happily distance myself from the OP. 8)
