Poles and Finns unite...
Over wodka!!! The Poles would like a stiricter definition for vodka in the EU: made exclusively from potatoes or grain. And they are not alone. Quote of the day: I don't want vodka to be a product which can be made of all agricultural products, which basically means you can use it to wash your windows. Alexander Stubb Finnish MEP This is a battle of the vodka belt against the wine belt. In between lies the beer belt, which will get to decide. Finnish MEP Lasse Lehtinen Can we call the Poles and the Finns 'wodka racist'? :) European wodka war

I like the line about In between lies the beer belt (Is it ok if I'm laughing about this) :serious: OK, I do agree that there ought to be a legal definition for Wodka. Just as I think that there needs to be a legal definition for anything calling itself "Lite" or "Natural"

I'm all for purity but if you can't taste the difference, why does it matter?

bigsleepj- 06-19-2007

Reminds me of the Port / Sherry controversy we had here a few years ago.

Miss Jayme Kat- 06-19-2007

*looks down* *cannot see beer belt due to size of beer belly*

Storm_Raven- 06-19-2007

Personally I agree with the Finns and Poles, we have strict definitions of Champagne, Port, etc, I only drink honey vodka of the vodka drinks and yes you definitely can taste the difference between makes. Storm Raven

The fact that the wodka belt produces and consumes 70% of wodka in Europe is pretty impressive.

Can we call the Poles and the Finns 'wodka racist'? :) Not at all, we are connoisseurs! :D I agree with Stubb, it makes it pointless if you can destill just about anything and call it vodka. I know Finnish has a separate word for "generic" strong liqor ("viina"; Koskenkorva is a "viina", and Finns would prefer to call it "a very dry wine" than a "vodka"), surely there ia a name for it in English, too. Or is it just "booze"?

surely there ia a name for it in English, too. Or is it just "booze"? In the US, anything that isn't wine or beer is referred to collectively as 'hard liquor'. 'Booze' is what my parents' generation called it. :)

Our local alcoholic drinks shop (off-licence in British parlance) is called Bargain Booze.

Our local alcoholic drinks shop (off-licence in British parlance) is called Bargain Booze. We call them liquor stores. :)

I took the liberty of translating the editorial cartoon from Friday's newspaper (remember this weekend was Midsummer, a major boozefest):

Is this the first time 'EU constitution' mentioned here? And we are europeforum! This says a lot about the enthusiasm Europeans are with the constitution  . They just changed it to EU reform treaty, in case you haven't heard of it (and the Brits seem to get want they want again  ).

Miisa- 06-25-2007

Uniting Europe is a bit like herding cats, really.

That's a wonderful analogy, Miisa, bizarre but accurate.
