Heard about it on the news. Sad. :(

LazarusMoose- 11-07-2007

Yeah I heard about it too. Very Americanised :( Where did he get the gun?

Charlie Brown- 11-07-2007

Very very sad.

Karen- 11-07-2007

Where did he get the gun? The CNN article said: Police also said that the gun Auvinen used, which was fully licensed, had been purchased less than a month ago on October 19. The legal age limit to own a gun in Finland is 18, which Auvinen passed in June of this year. He had a recommendation from a shooting club when he obtained the gun, police added, and practised sharp-shooting as a hobby at a shooting range. Finland, which enjoys a strong tradition of hunting, has a high proportion of gun ownership, with two million firearms owned in a nation of only five million.

We can no longer be smug and say "Such thing only happen in USA, b/c of lax gun control and their special mentality". The killer was a loner, hated everyone etc. And the killings were planned long before, I gather. He joined the shooting club to get a gun. Seems the world gets unsafer every day. For every new shooting, a new guy gets inspiration.

I just came to work, the atmosphere in our school in very sad and quiet. I think I have been in some sort of a shock until now, the first tears came just minutes ago. It's absurd. And sad. And like our prime minister said, it's going to take a long time before we'll feel safe again. I have a candle here in the library and we'll have two silent moments during the day. I don't know what else to say.

Starflower- 11-08-2007

It is really shocking - because you grow up thinking nothing like this can happen in Finland. And then it does. I feel very acutely alone today, having no Finnish friends here to share it with

I was saying a Requiem Mass for a guild last night, those youngsters and their bereaved families were greatly on my mind.

Foolsbidding- 11-08-2007

The killer wasn't exatly hated or bullied. He had many friends who have been interviewed in finnish media. I'm same age student as the shooter and I know few people from Tuusula (not from that school), so I have heard quite many stories how it all happened (stories in media are starting to match my friends story). Shooter was also trying to burn the school. He had gasoline or something else flammable (police hasn't been very specific in media) with him. It's a sad case, but there have been very sad reactions in media after this. There are many examples of this, but they're in finnish. This one made me actually laugh, eventhough this is serious. :? http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/article2828084.ece

We can no longer be smug and say "Such thing only happen in USA, b/c of lax gun control and their special mentality". No, it has been happening all over lately, Australia and Germany leap to mind from recent happenings. It is depatable how much influence the visibility of previous such attacks has, apperntly this guy idolised the Columbine and Virginia Tech shooters. The killer wasn't exatly hated or bullied. He had many friends who have been interviewed in finnish media. I have heard many reports that he had been bullied for years. Just because you have friends doesn't mean you are immune. He was seen a "good kid" and that is not only the type to be bullied easily, but also the type to bottle it up until they snap. This guy's ideologies had become pretty twisted. If you are led to believe by your peers for ten yeras that "we can do what we like to you because we are stronger" you will embrace that type of social darwinism. :(

LazarusMoose- 11-08-2007

I dunno .. lots of people are bullied and they don't react in such a terrible way :(

Foolsbidding- 11-08-2007

Perhaps so. I have heard only about 2007 and those stories tell that he wasn't bullied during his stay in the school where this occurred. Makes sense, when you think about it. There are few good examples in my school about how to be a bit strange, but not being bullied or anything. I have got the image that he was respected, but still a bit strange case. If it was the anger that drove him into that, he deseves a bit sympathy. Otherwise I have no mercy for idealistic people who choose to do such things cold blooded. It seems that principal and nurse tried to stop him. :( Wonder if they had been trained to this kind of situation somehow. I have heard that nurse get some training how to act if student tries to make a suicide. To die, because you're responsible of your students doesn't sound very good to me and not what you would expect when you choose to be a teacher.

Miisa- 11-08-2007

I dunno .. lots of people are bullied and they don't react in such a terrible way :( Each circumstance is different, as is each person and each mind. Everyone has a breaking point, it is just at differnt places for different people.
