Pictures/Video to come, just got home.

I BELIEVE it was a controlled/training fire though quite the shame if so as the house was beautiful. When I got there a crowd had amassed and while 3 fire trucks, the water hoses had been redirected and turned off to drain, so they are letting it burn down at this point. Sat and watched for 40 minutes or so.

We would set an aircraft on fire when I was in the Navy for fire-fighting training.

Wow. That sounds .. expensive?

Couldn't you just build a scrap wood bonfire and fire fighter train on that?

It was a junk plane....

It sat in a concrete enclosure which they'd flood with diesel fuel and then ignite the diesel fuel.

It was fun times actually.....

Officers had to go through it as well.

Nothing better than watching a Commander handling a pressurized water hose.

I was always under the impression that firemen used brick structures that would burn everything inside (fake people, cheap beds, etc) but the structure could be used again ... and was only built for training.

But I can't figure out why else this thing was just burning, and they let me get within 15 feet or so (they didn't tell me not to get closer, the heat of the fire did lol) they were letting it burn down at that point. So either it would be easier to let it burn out, or they were letting it burn.

I've seen the gutted jets on carriers at the naval base right outside my old job.

you can kinda see the plane on it, it is just for practice. They will apparently set it on fire, drop it in the river, etc for proper rescue missions.

ah, that's the Iwo Jima. Speaking pedantically, not a carrier. She must have just been coming back from deployment, she needs a paint job bad.

How can you see that? Don't all boats of a make look the same?

I can tell it's a LHD (Landing Platform, Helicopter, Dock) instead of a carrier from the shape of the island and the position of the port elevator. The 7 on the island tells me it's the Iwo Jima.

I think the big 7 on it shows the name.

I can't tell the difference between any of them (but I can always tell which ones are coming or going to battle, or ready for it... you can't miss those guns!)

The people who worked with me were all retired military so they would go on about the ships, what they were, the bits, the guns, the missiles, torpedos and what not.

I just took pictures ^_^

I think it is only obvious if you know where to look (I only knew where to look because there was one outside my windows everyday where I spent 8 hours mon-fri lol

I worked right at the edge of the greatest (unless I'm mistaken) US Navy base on the east coast (Norfolk,Virginia) so I saw heaps of them.

I was never sure of the meaning of the numbers but I figured it was something like the naming and such.

"Fire! FIRE! FIRE! Heh heh heh!" Very Happy

On the air base I was stationed at for most of my career, they had a metal shell which represented an aircraft (though it was clear this had never been an actual plane), which was used for training. Apparently, they had pipes from which they could shoot out flames. I guess it was just a simulated burn though.

I thought civilian firefighters would sometimes train on houses which were going to be demolished anyway.

Me, I love a good fire!

If it wasn't anybodies house as such, that would have been so cool. Fire is awesome.

I'm with Shake on that one. Fire is cool and burning down stuff is the coolest.

Driving by at 50 MPH, while watching the road, I took out my phone and shot a pic in the general direction of the wreck. It came out well Very Happy Here it is zoomed in. All that seemed to be standing was the chimney.

It looks like the firemen did a great job of saving the trees. Maybe the firemen are hippies.

hehe ^_^

The trees were pretty far off, perspective. I think that one blocking the firetruck in the pic is the closest to the house and I was under that one when I took my close up pics and that was 15 feet or so from the house.

But yeah, the one thing my area does keep is its trees. They don't give a fook about history and rape every historic site around here (many, I know I've already ranted about it but this whole area is where the English began in America.) but they do love the trees and keep those for aesthetics. Almost every neighbourhood and section has "forest" in its name. I live in "Cheshire Forest" next to "Forest Lakes" und so weiter.
