I had a very deep experience at Mariazell ... very deep ... life changing ... and the fact that the best way to get there is by electric narrow gauge railway didn't hurt one little bit.

It was truly remarkable.
I have a talk I give to church groups using slides from it based on the fact that if you get off the train at St. Poelten (on the main line) there are two branch lines that are available: one goes to Mariazell (heaven) and the other goes to Mauthausen (absolute hell).

There used to be some very interesting trains there when I knew the place regularly ... you can get to Vienna two ways, on the 'outer-suburban' service plus the expresses on the main line that take about an hour ... or there is a complicated route that heads off south and wanders around a bit - and really does take all day about it.
The cathdral there is tiny, it is on the corner of the market square and was founded in Roman times ...

St. Poelten is as close as you can get to the heart of Catholic Austria, so not near the borders at all! There was an active anti-Nazi resistance movement and the locals make a point of the fact that the Gestapo murdered more people there than in most of the rest of the country put together.
